Clinical Significance of Salivary Alpha-amylase Activity in Patients With Parkinson's Disease

Yui Mukaiyama, Mariko Inoue, Nichika Sumitomo, Noriko Kawazoe, Takayuki Tsuchihashi, Harunobu Shima, Takao Mitsui

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) and clinical indicators in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The results showed that the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) remained as the only factor related to sAA in PD patients, while sAA was strongly associated with age in the control groups. These findings suggest that sAA could serve as a marker of mental stress in PD patients, whereas in healthy individuals, it is mainly influenced by age-related sympathetic tone.

'Here, we describe them as forgetful, confused, and absent-minded': dementia knowledge, stigma, and care plan among Vietnamese adults in rural area

Trang Thu Nguyen

Summary: The study found that Vietnamese adults in rural Vietnam have moderate knowledge about dementia, but tend to use language that connotes symptoms and stigma when describing people with dementia. Dementia stigma was found to be positively associated with age, number of older adults they have currently lived with, and anxiety about aging, while it was negatively associated with being married, knowing someone with dementia, and having greater Alzheimer's disease knowledge. Most participants prioritized a future dementia care plan, and this intention was influenced by factors such as knowing someone with dementia, worry about getting dementia and caring for someone with dementia in the future, and having a higher level of Alzheimer's disease knowledge.

Sex differences in symptom presentation and their impact on diagnostic accuracy in Werner syndrome

Hiyori Kaneko, Yoshiro Maezawa, Ayano Tsukagoshi-Yamaguchi, Masaya Koshizaka, Aki Takada-Watanabe, Rito Nakamura, Shinichiro Funayama, Kazuto Aono, Naoya Teramoto, Daisuke Sawada, Yukari Maeda, Takuya Minamizuka, Aiko Hayashi, Kana Ide, Shintaro Ide, Mayumi Shoji, Takumi Kitamoto, Minoru Takemoto, Hisaya Kato, Koutaro Yokote

Summary: This study investigated sex differences in patients with Werner syndrome (WS), a model of human aging. It found that male patients with WS were more likely to exhibit all cardinal signs compared to females. Female patients also had a lower frequency of a characteristic symptom of WS. The study highlights the importance of genetic testing for females with WS, even if they do not display typical symptoms. These findings suggest that there are sex differences in the phenotypes of hereditary progeroid syndromes and may contribute to understanding sex differences in normal human aging symptoms.
