Summary: Chronic hyperglycemia accelerates the pathological process of cognitive dysfunction, but the heterogeneity of hippocampal cells under long-term high glucose conditions is not well known. In this study, single-cell RNA sequencing was performed on diabetic mice, and distinct cell sub-clusters and important genes involved in neuroplasticity regulation were identified.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicity mechanism of homo-YTX and NH3-N on the survival of abalone. The results showed that homo-YTX and NH3-N enhanced oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation reactions, inhibited energy supply, disrupted metabolic and immune physiological functions, and activated apoptosis in the gills of abalone.

Utility of BoneXpert in assessing bone age and bone health in Indian children and youth with type 1 diabetes mellitus

Summary: This study revealed that BoneXpert (BX) can be used for accurate assessment of bone age and screening of bone health in Indian children and youth with type-1 diabetes (T1D). 51.5% of T1D subjects showed significantly decreased metacarpal index (MCI). Height, Tanner stage, and vitamin D concentrations were positively correlated with MCI, while HbA1c and disease duration were negatively correlated with MCI.

Iodine status of school-aged children in the changing context of universal salt iodization program during 1997-2018 in Chongqing, China

Summary: The study illustrates the changes in iodized salt usage, goiter rate, and median urinary iodine concentration in school-aged children in Chongqing over the past 21 years. Adequate iodized salt consumption can eliminate iodine deficiency disorders in children, but excessive iodine intake from salt can lead to high urinary iodine excretion and even goiter. Continuous monitoring and adjustment of iodine fortification levels in household table salt is crucial.

Testosterone's role in modulating human behaviors relevant to mating and parenting

Summary: This study comprehensively reviewed the evidence on the impact of testosterone on human mating and parenting behaviors. The findings suggest that basal testosterone levels are related to mating and parenting behaviors in both men and women. Testosterone responds to reproduction-relevant cues and acute changes in testosterone levels are associated with subsequent mating and parenting behaviors. Single-dose exogenous testosterone administration may causally affect mating and parenting behaviors. However, the support for trade-off interpretations of testosterone's adaptive function is mixed, indicating that the role of testosterone in modulating human mating and parenting is complex and context-dependent.

Noise and light pollution elicit endocrine responses in urban but not forest frogs

Summary: This study investigates the effects of urbanization on hormone levels in tungara frogs and found that urban frogs and forest frogs have different endocrine phenotypes. Exposure to urban noise and light pollution led to an increase in testosterone and a decrease in corticosterone in urban frogs, while forest frogs showed no endocrine response to sensory pollutants. These results suggest that urbanization can modulate hormone levels and influence behavior in frogs.

Role of advanced glycation endproducts in bone fragility in type 1 diabetes

Summary: The increased risk of fractures observed in adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) cannot be solely explained by modest decreases in areal bone mineral density (BMD). Accumulation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) in bone has been suggested as a possible cause for the increased bone fragility in diabetes. Although the evidence linking AGEs and fractures in individuals with T1D is limited, recent data show that AGEs, as measured by skin intrinsic fluorescence, are a risk factor for lower BMD in T1D. Further research is needed to determine if there is a causal relationship between fractures and AGEs in T1D. If confirmed, this could lead to interventions that can reduce AGE accumulation and ultimately reduce fractures in T1D patients.

Summary: The zinc coordination complex ZnMD, synthesized in this study, showed promising effects in treating hypertension and cardiac hypertrophy. It was more effective than the antihypertensive drug MD in reducing blood pressure and preventing myocardial hypertrophy. ZnMD also exhibited protective effects on the heart by reducing oxidative damage and regulating the expression of oxidative enzymes. These findings suggest that ZnMD has the potential to be developed as a therapeutic drug for hypertension and cardiac dysfunction.
