Analysis of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea in Craniofacial Microsomia Based on Polysomnography

Lun-kun Ma, Zhi-yong Zhang, Xiao-jun Tang, Xi Xu, Shi Feng, Shan-baga Zhao, Bing-yang Liu, Tian-ying Zang, Hong-wen Li, Wei Liu

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in patients with craniofacial microsomia (CFM) and its relationship with the severity of CFM. The results showed that CFM patients, particularly those with type II and type III, have a higher incidence of OSA. However, the incidence of OSA does not correlate positively with the severity of CFM, with type III patients having certain particularities.

Assessment of oropharyngeal respiratory volume and sleep apnoea scores using peripheral arterial tonometry may improve diagnosis and treatment planning of combined dysgnathia therapy approaches

Bernhard Wiechens, Soeren J. Backhaus, David Oestreicher, Dirk Beutner, Henning Schliephake, Philipp Meyer-Marcotty, Phillipp Brockmeyer

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between dysgnathia and daytime sleepiness using PAT and oropharyngeal airway volume determination. The results showed that patients with dysgnathia had higher respiratory indices and smaller oropharyngeal volumes. The severity of dysgnathia directly influenced the risk of obstructive sleep apnea.

DLL4/Notch blockade disrupts mandibular advancement-induced condylar osteogenesis by inhibiting H-type angiogenesis

Yun Hu, Hegang Li

Summary: This study found that blocking the DLL4/Notch signaling pathway can inhibit H-type angiogenesis, resulting in shortened femur length and reduced bone mass. It also found that blocking DLL4/Notch has a negative impact on mandibular condylar osteogenesis, volume, and quality.

Periodontitis and risk of cancer: Mechanistic evidence

Giacomo Baima, Margherita Minoli, Dominique S. Michaud, Mario Aimetti, Mariano Sanz, Bruno G. Loos, Mario Romandini

Summary: This review critically analyzes the pathways and mechanisms linking periodontitis and oral bacteria with the initiation and progression of cancer at different body compartments. The relationship between periodontitis and head and neck cancer has been consistently associated. Mechanisms such as the induction of chronic systemic inflammation and the spreading of oral pathobionts have been involved.
