Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a promising alternative for valorizing food waste digestate (FWD) and avoiding disposal issues. Co-HTC of FWD with wet lignocellulosic biomass, such as wet yard waste (YW), and 0.5 M HCl shows superior attributes in terms of energy recovery and nutrient recovery from process water. However, attention should be paid to the carbon loss issue during the process.

Summary: Blending of plasticized hydroxypropyl cassava thermoplastic starch (TPS) with polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) via blown-film extrusion was studied. Higher DS values were found to increase film clarity and glossy surface, reduce crystallinity, improve hydrophilicity, mechanical properties and compatibility between PBAT and TPS. Modified DS in hydroxypropyl starch efficiently improved clarity, mechanical and barrier properties of bioplastic packaging.

Summary: Due to food shortages and increasing fuel prices, scientists are exploring alternative non-edible feedstocks, such as jojoba and Schizochytrium sp. microalgae, for sustainable biodiesel production. The use of low-cost nanocatalysts, like CaO, instead of homogeneous catalysts can reduce the cost and eliminate certain steps in the biodiesel production process. The findings highlight the potential of nano-catalysts in achieving high biodiesel yields with their unique features of high surface area, reusability, reactivity, and environmental friendliness.
