The mitosporic fungus Chalara fraxinea (Ascomycota) is associated with dieback of common ash, an emerging disease of Fraxinus excelsior (Oleaceae) in Europe. The pathogenicity of C. fraxinea was demonstrated by field inoculations on young trees.
