A new designer benzylpiperazine was seized in Germany for the first time. Interpreting the results Of gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), product ion spectroscopy (GC-MS/MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy the compound was 4-bromo-2,5-dimethoxybenzylpiperazine. The structure of the new benzylpiperazine was finally proved by two-dimensional NMR correlations and by GC-MS after synthesis of two of the possible isomers from commercially available starting materials. Additionally mass spectroscopic data after liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS/MS) using electrospray ionization (ESI) as well as ultraviolet (UV) spectral data of the new compound are presented. A small quantity of the new benzylpiperazine was seized in very high purity along with other also very pure designer drugs in Hamburg, Germany. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
