This paper introduces a unique technique for the design of single and multi-layered, periodic lattice structures. Specifically, small-scale compliant mechanisms are integrated into large-scale structures for specific dynamic functionality. Accordingly, the mid-frequency computational analysis of such structures at multiple scales is reviewed, and the results from several recent design studies are presented to illustrate the methodology. Highlighted applications include the design of alternative material structures, multi-layered partitions having enhanced vibro-acoustic characteristics, lightweight truss structures with multi-functional properties, and three-dimensional lattices.
