Magnetic and luminescence properties of lanthanide complexes have been extensively studied; however, their potentialities in nonlinear optics (NLO) have been less explored. Since beginning of the 2000s, these properties have become an emerging field of research from the point of view of both fundamental aspects and bioimaging applications In this microreview, we attempt to make an exhaustive compilation of about ten years of research endeavours in lanthanide coordination chemistry and crystal engineering for nonlinear optics.
