During the last decade, the structure of the subsite of [FeFe]H(2)ases (or Fe-only hydrogenases) has inspired organometallic chemists to find out whether it was possible to build synthetic molecules, based on sulfur, iron, carbon monoxide and cyanide or surrogates, having the same efficiency for hydrogen production/uptake as that of the enzyme. A short nonexhaustive overview of recent advances in this chemistry is presented. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)
