Large-scale orthorhombic V2O5 single-crystalline nanowires with diameters of 60-80 nm and lengths into the millimeter range were synthesized through a facile template-free, mild, and direct hydrothermal. reaction between VOSO4 center dot xH(2)O and KMnO4. The nanowires are nearly visible to the naked eye and are by far the longest 1D nanostructures of vanadium oxide ever fabricated. The impacts of the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the oxidant were studied by parallel experiments by using different kinds of oxidants, and both were found to be crucial for the successful synthesis of the ultralong V2O5 nanowires.
