DC are specialized antigen-presenting cells that serve as essential mediators of immunity and tolerance. DC's functional versatility is enabled in part by the various DC subsets with heterogeneous cell surface markers and anatomic locations. Here, we review the development and homeostasis of DC found in lymphoid and non-lymphoid tissues.
