Sulfur assimilation and production of sulfur-containing compounds are essential biological activities that play critical roles in many biological processes, including the role of sulfur containing compounds such as glutathione and phytochelatin in trace element homeostasis in plants. This review will discuss the role of sulfur assimilation and the biosynthesis of sulfur containing compounds in both mechanisms of trace element hyperaccumulation and heavy metal stress responses in plants.
