It is demonstrated that beta-Co(OH)(2) has a high discharge capacity and good high-rate discharge ability as a negative electrode material. A new rechargeable battery system with higher energy density, consisting of alpha-phase nickel hydroxides as the positive electrode material and beta-cobalt hydroxides as the negative electrode material, is proposed on the basis of multi-electron reactions.
