A novel methodology for ultra-thin and broadband radar absorbing material (RAM) design is proposed. The method is based on periodically arranging two different types of thin planar slabs that are both artificial magnetic conductors (AMCs) with different phase characteristics that are arranged in a checkerboard configuration. By controlling the phase difference between the two types of AMC slabs, the energy which is normally incident on the screen is redirected, and the RCS along the boresight is reduced over a wide frequency range.
