CoOOH nanosheet arrays were prepared directly on a cobalt substrate via a simple alkaline treatment at room temperature. A non-enzymatic glucose sensor was proposed based on the CoOOH nanosheets. The electrocatalytic behaviors towards glucose were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in alkaline aqueous solution. The amperometric detection of glucose was carried out at 0.40 V and 0.50 V (versus Ag/AgCl). At 0.50 V, the amperometric signals are linearly proportional to glucose concentration up to 500 mu M (R = 0.9967), showing a detection limit (S/N =3) of 10.9 mu M and high sensitivity of 967 mu AmM-1 cm(-2). The high sensitivity towards glucose is mainly attributed to direct growth and self-supported features of CoOOH nanosheets on a conducting substrate. In addition, this novel sensor is immune to chloride ion poisoning at high concentration. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
