We present an assessment of twenty years of strategies from our group dedicated to the electrochemical detection of nitric oxide NO in solution, for biological applications. We provide a full description of the electrochemical approaches and we summarize the significant research contributions towards the development of sensors. We emphasize the importance of understanding how to improve the performances of the sensors in terms of sensitivity and selectivity. A brief outlook into the future perspectives of the use of multi electrochemical array sensor is presented.
