In the mountains of Central Greece (Mt. Parnassos, Mt. Giona, Mt. Iti), in the Peloponnesus (Mt. Menalo, Mt. Parnon, Mt. Chelmos, Mt. Panachaiko, Pteri) and in Epirus (South Pindos, Katara Pass), a new species of Cicadetta montana complex has been discovered. Cicadetta hannekeae sp. n. is morphologically very similar to other species of this complex but has a characteristic and distinct song. This species was found at elevations from 800 to 1700 m and apparently replaces in these localities C macedonica and C. montana s. str., found in the Southern Balkans (North Pindos, Mt. Vourinos, Mt. Galicica, Mt. Pelister, Radika Gorge and Suva Planina).
