A novel hydrothermal dephosphorylation route for the synthesis of ultrasmall nucleotide-coated superparamagnetic gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (similar to 5 nm) has been demonstrated. The synthesized gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles show excellent thermal stability, water dispersion and biocompatibility, allowing possible applications for in vivo X-ray contrast agents.
