NaYF4:Ln(3+) (Ln Eu, Sm, Pr and Yb/Er) hexagonal microprisms have been successfully synthesized using a mild hydrothermal method. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) have been employed to investigate the formation of NaYF4:Ln(3+) hexagonal microprisms and a possible growth mechanism was proposed. The down- and up-conversion luminescence of hexagonal NaYF4:Ln(3+) (Ln - Eu, Sm, Pr and Yb/Er) microprisms have been characterized.
