In this paper the algorithm needed for performing a crack growth analysis of a three-dimensional component by post-processing results from a standard finite element stress analysis is given, Weight functions are used for calculating the stress intensity factor for an embedded crack and a surface crack. Defects are generated in several nominally equal components, and crack growth calculations are carried out by using a short crack model to determine the probability of component fatigue failure. The algorithm has been implemented in a finite element post-processor. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
