In this study, thermal residual stresses in two SiC-ceramic matrix composites reinforced with carbon fiber (C/SiC) and silicon carbide fiber (SiC/SiC) were completely investigated. Thermal residual stress in the C/SiC was quantified by three different methods of experimental measurement, analytical calculation, and theoretical prediction, and then compared with that in the SiC/SiC. Good agreement between these methods was observed and their applicability to the present composite systems was validated. Relationships between the thermal residual stress state and macroscopic mechanical properties of the composites (e.g., the first matrix cracking stress) are discussed. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd.
