Instead of the usual Hirota ansatz, i.e., the functions in bilinear equations being chosen as exponential types, a generalized Hirota ansatz is proposed for a (3+1)-dimensional nonlinear evolution equation. Based on the resulting generalized Hirota ansatz, a family of new explicit solutions for the equation are derived.
