In a novel experimental approach Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was applied as a tool for studying the kinetics of gold nanoparticle growth. The gold nanoparticles were obtained by classical Turkevich citrate synthesis at two different temperatures. From the analysis of AFM images during the synthesis process the nanoparticle s' sizes were obtained. To demonstrate the applicability and the reliability of the proposed experimental approach we studied the nanoparticles growth at two different temperatures by spectrophotometric measurements and compared them with the results from AFM experimental approach. We also compared AFM experimental data with Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) data. The experimental data from all the applied methods were fitted with two step Finke-Watzky kinetics model and the corresponding kinetics constants were obtained and compared. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V.
