This paper reports on improving light scattering from novel pigments developed for paper coatings using blends of common precipitated calcium carbonates and various nanoparticles. The measurements were performed for compacts representing pigment coatings, which were compressed from powder. The results show that it is possible to increase the light scattering from pigment compact, and hence affect the opacity of paper significantly by introducing nanoparticles over the pigments. Light scattering from tablet samples was measured using an ellipsometer. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
