Many readers will be familiar with the highly pleiotropic nature of microRNAs (miRs), and also with the difficulty inherent in defining exactly what constitutes their interactome and how this varies between cell types and environmental contexts. We describe recent advances that should assist with harnessing the potential of miRs to regulate cellular and cardiac behavior, but also reflect on how the trap of assuming that we know enough may affect endeavors in mechanistic and therapeutic research.
