Mixtures of tryptamine and reactive C-5 units, presumably derived from lysine in nature, were studied to ascertain the spontaneous formation of the complex polycyclic alkaloid nitrarine. Several indolic compounds tracing the unified metabolism within the Nitraria genus were also characterized.
