The potential capability of an organic positive-electrode active material for rechargeable magnesium batteries was investigated. 2,5-Dimethoxy-1,4-benzoquinone (DMBQ), which is known to work as a positive-electrode active material in the lithium system, was examined. The DMBQ electrode showed a discharge capacity of 260mA h g((DMBQ))(-1) and an average voltage of 0.9 V versus a magnesium quasi-reference electrode. The DMBQ electrode was charged and discharged reversibly with Mg2+ ions for several cycles.
