A new acridine fluoroionophore derivative bearing lithium salt of thioglycolate, is designed and synthesized. Its fluorescence sensing behavior toward metal ions has been investigated in absolutely aqueous media (HEPES buffer solution, pH 7.4). It displayed a selective CHEF (chelation-enhanced fluorescence) effect toward Cd2+ in presence of other heavy and transitonmetal ions. Highly sensitive switching on response of the fluorophore toward Cd2+, facilitates it suitable for sensing of Cd2+ in aqueous media.
