The replacement of coordinated acetylacetonate for nitrate around a Dy-III ion results in the enhancement of the single molecule magnet properties of a {(Co2Dy2III)-Dy-III} complex, resulting in a large thermal energy barrier and reduced quantum tunnelling at low temperatures. The analogous Tb-III complex displays field induced SMM behaviour.
