The passive scattering losses were measured in near single-mode optical waveguide fibers with well-centered transparent glass-ceramic cores. Using difference spectra, it is shown that the incremental intrinsic losses of these glass-ceramic structures will be in the range of 100 dB/km or less. The magnitude of the scattering is discussed according to current theories. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
