At room temperature, gold nanoparticles were atomically dissolved in the presence of aromatic thiols and regenerated from the solution by treatment with H2O2, and the process is reversible. Moreover, the formed Au-thiol compounds have been demonstrated to be a powerful elemental building block for engineering various gold nanostructures.
