The direct aldol reaction of an alpha-alkyl-alpha-oxo aldehyde was catalyzed by trifluoromethyl-substituted diarylprolinol 1 to afford a gamma-oxo-beta-hydroxy-alpha-substituted aldehyde in good yield with excellent anti-selectivity and excellent enantioselectivity.
