Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is one of the most valuable tools used in the detection and management of prostate cancer. TRUS, digital rectal examination and prostate specific antigen results have combined predictive value for detection, but TRUS has become the gold standard for biopsy. Color Doppler also has played a valuable role in biopsy guidance of previously missed cancers. These techniques help identify high-risk patients (along with age and race) and help to reduce the number of very low risk biopsies performed.
