The electrochemical reduction of Fe-III to FeII in the ionic liquid (IL) mixture of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate, [C(2)C(1)Im][EtOSO3], and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroferrate (III), [C(4)C(1)Im][(FeCl4)-Cl-III], was monitored in situ by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
