A novel aggregation-induced phosphorescent emission (AIPE) was observed for iridium(III) complexes. This interesting phenomenon was attributed to the intermolecular packing, resulting in a switch from the non-emissive (LX)-L-3 excited state to the emissive (MLLCT)-M-3 transition, which is confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies as well as theoretical calculations.
