Since fluorous technology was first introduced by Horvath and Rabai in 1994, it has become well established in biphasic catalysis, high-throughput synthesis of small molecules and separation of biomolecules. In the last five years or so, this solution-phase technology has penetrated to other areas and shown great promise in organocatalysis, biocatalysis, microarray and microfluidic technologies. This feature article highlights the development of fluorous technologies in these new fields.
