0.5 wt.% of each catalyst (Co, Ni) used to synthesize single shell nanotubes are found to remain in purified samples even after prolonged treatments in boiling concentrated HNO3. Chemical analysis, Co-59 NMR experiments and HRTEM observations suggest an even distribution of small clusters or isolated atoms of these transition elements between or within the nanotubes, (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.
