The birefringence in the cubic phase of BaTiO3 has been measured as a function of temperature. The results have been interpreted in terms of the anisotropy of polarization fluctuation that appears as a precursor of the phase transition. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
