The required activities for the ZSM-5 in the AlphOx(TM), one-step conversion of benzene into phenol with nitrous oxide, are investigated. It is shown that both Bronsted acidity and the alpha-sites, linked to the presence of iron, are necessary. Previous reports on the subject are discussed.
