Studies of the oxygen reduction mechanism were performed in acidic liquid ammonia at 223 K. Pt microelectrodes and III-V semi-conductors were used as probes. With both types of electrode it was found that two electrons are required for oxygen reduction and a chemical reaction involving two ammonium ions (NH:) is essential.
