Wheat anther cultures have a history of almost 30 years and are now employed efficiently in many countries of the world for the development of doubled haploid lines for breeding. The present paper discusses key questions of the elaboration and perfection of the method: cytological aspects of in vitro androgenesis, the conditions required for the embryogenic development of microspores and the applicability of anther cultures in the Martonvasar wheat breeding programme.
