Transparent Eu:Y3Al5O12 (Eu:YAG) fluorescent ceramics were fabricated by the solid-state reaction method using commercial Y2O3, alpha-Al2O3 and Eu2O3 as starting powders. The influence of Eu3+ concentration on the microstructure and optical properties of the obtained ceramics was investigated. Microstructure results indicated that all the ceramics with different Eu3+ concentrations possessed clean grain boundaries and homogeneous grains with the size range from 16.7 mu m to 19.9 pm. Both absorption and emission peak intensities strengthen with increasing Eu3+ concentration. The samples do not show concentration quenching for Eu3+ concentration above 0.7 at%, but the fluorescence properties are affected by the self-absorption of Eu3+ ions.
