Since 1780, when tarsiers were finally recognized as primates,(1) they have been the focus of numerous controversies. Most notably, there has been considerable debate over their phylogenetic position within the order Primates.(2-8) While some scientists have argued that tarsiers are more closely related to the anthropoid primates, others have suggested that the tarsiers are more closely related to the strepsirrhines. The question of tarsier phylogeny is tremendously complicated and unlikely to be resolved anytime soon.
