The effects of doped activated carbons on sintering of magnesia have been investigated in this paper. It was found that the magnesia with porosity less than 1.5% and bulk density achieved to 3.50 g/m(3) could be prepared at low temperature by this activated sintering method. The sintering activation energies with different doses of activated carbon were calculated from 1173 K-1473 K. The results proved that the alternating oxidation-reduction reaction decreased the sintering activation energy from 56.82 kJ/mol to 29.64 kJ/mol and accelerated the grain boundary diffusion in the sintering process. The activated carbon species, particle size, and addition content were also tested and the experimental results were discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.
