Breast cancer seemed to be an unsolved problem for much of the last century. An unchanging death rate from 1930 to 1960 occurred in the face of enormous changes in diagnosis and treatment. This article discusses many of the treatments that have been applied, including hormonal manipulation, supervoltage radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and the recently accepted use of tamoxifen as postsurgical treatment.
