Forty-six species of bats (15 megabats, 31 microbats) are documented for Brunei Darussalam, comprising 47 % of the bat fauna of Borneo (98 species). Batu Apoi National Park (50 000 ha) is Brunei's only protected area, and 32 species of bats (11 megabats, 21 microbats) are recorded, comprising 70 % of the bat fauna of Brunei and 33 % of Borneo. Kuala Belalong (site of Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre) in Batu Apoi National Park was the focus of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam / Royal Geographical Society Brunei Rainforest Project 1991-1992. Thirty-one species of bats (10 megabats, 21 microbats) are recorded here. Further trapping in Batu Apoi National Park and elsewhere in Brunei is expected to yield additional species of bats as yet unrecorded here, and the use of harp traps is especially encouraged.
