The determination of metal ions in the environmental samples by capillary electrophoresis is an important area for the environmental chemists. The determination of metal ions in water, soil and sediment samples by capillary electrophoresis is reviewed. Various aspects of analysis such as sample pre-treatment, metal ion complexation, detection, choice of visualizing agents, detection limit and choice of electrolytes have been discussed. Suggestions to improve the application of CE for metal ions analysis are given. The future scope of this technique has also been discussed.
