Over the last decade significant advances have been made in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that control early aspects of mammalian liver development. Studies using tissue explant cultures and molecular biology techniques as well as the analysis of transgenic and knockout mice have identified signaling molecules and transcription factors that are necessary for the onset of hepatogenesis. This review presents an overview of these studies and discusses the role of individual factors during hepatic development. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
