Exercise exerts beneficial effects on systemic metabolism. A recent Nature paper (Bostrom et al., 2012) identifies irisin as an exercise-induced hormone secreted by skeletal muscle in mice and humans. Irisin promotes brown adipocyte recruitment in white fat and improves systemic metabolism by increasing energy expenditure.
