Sensors for electronic article surveillance have meanwhile become a mass application for sophisticated soft magnetic materials. A specifically designed magnetization behavior allows, to reliably detect the tiny little sensors over distances up to several meters and to distinguish them from other magnetic objects. The article surveys the most widespread systems and gives an insight into the material technology behind these security labels. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
